Banu Demiralp
President and Chief Executive Officer
Banu Demiralp is the Founder and the Chief Executive Officer of BD2.  An international development and human rights analyst with over 10 years of experience, Ms. Demiralp’s research and projects have primarily focused on security and stability particularly in developing economies, human rights and democratization. Ms. Demiralp’s areas of expertise include post-conflict and fragile state market research and analysis; reconstruction and stabilization policy; monitoring and evaluation of international development projects; and research and monitoring of human trafficking and forced labor.  Ms. Demiralp also draws on her experience in international development and legal sectors to monitor and analyze U.S. and international trade policy for public and private sector clients.  In addition to her work at BD2, Ms. Demiralp is the Co-Founder and President of Anka Rising—a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with a mission to educate and raise awareness within the private sector about the crime of modern-day-slavery while encouraging businesses to adopt anti-modern-day slavery policy and practices.  Ms. Demiralp is a member of the Board of Directors of the Organization of Women in International Trade (OWIT), and a member of its Washington, DC chapter, the Women in International Trade (WIIT).  She received her M.S. in Peace Operations Policy from George Mason University’s School of Public Policy in Arlington, Virginia and her B.A. in History from Hope College in Holland, Michigan.

Berna Demiralp
Executive Vice President and Director of Research
Berna Demiralp is the Executive Vice President and Director of Research at BD2.  Dr. Demiralp is an applied microeconomist with expertise in labor and demographic economics. Her research focuses on entrepreneurship and small business growth, regional economic development, and occupational choice and asymmetric information in the labor market.  She is also a lecturer in Johns Hopkins University’s Masters in Applied Economics Program.  Prior to joining BD2, Dr. Demiralp was a Senior Research Associate at a small policy research firm where she served as Project Director and Lead Analyst for projects funded by the Small Business Administration (SBA), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).  She has led evaluations of projects on regional clusters, entrepreneurship and innovation, workforce training and higher education, and international development. Dr. Demiralp also worked as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at Old Dominion University, where her research received funding from the Old Dominion University Summer Research Fellowship and Michigan Retirement and Research Center.  Dr. Demiralp has significant experience in both quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis methods. She has published in peer-reviewed journals including European Economic Review, Journal of Macroeconomics, Eastern Economic Review and Journal of Economics and Finance. She received her Ph.D. in economics from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland and her B.A. from Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina.
